My “old man”…
My “old man” is the term I use to refer to the family dog, Cody. Last month Cody turned 17.
Yesterday, while the kids and I were visiting with my Aunt, he got his hind legs caught in the wheel of my son’s bicycle and was stuck. I have no idea how long he was like that before I got home. There was a lot of blood and he was crying and panting heavily – likely due to his struggling. It broke my heart to see him hurt.
He was rushed to the vet and now he’s on antibiotics and pain meds. Last night Cody and I were up off and on most of the night. It was heartbreaking to see him struggle to stand. He already has severe arthritis in his hips, so injury to his hind legs makes his mobility much more limited. He can stand only briefly before falling down…and he cannot get up on his own, but I have to gently lift him. This morning he couldn’t even get up to go relieve himself. He looked at me with his poor, sad, painful eyes and I helped him, cleaned him up, and then went to work on my carpet. I invested in a home carpet shampoo machine a couple of years ago since he’s started to have more accidents. I’m thankful for it or else I’d pay tons in professional carpet cleaning services. In addition to what I do, I get it professionally cleaned every few months because I don’t want my house to be or feel dirty.
What’s also so sad to me is that he and my daughter are rarely separated. He follows her everywhere. When she goes to school, he’ll sit at the front door for a while before going in her room to lie on her dirty clothes (to have her smell with him). They are so close. I’m relieved that she wasn’t here to see his injury because it would have really upset her. The kids will be busy for the next few weeks. She’s with Grammy & Papa for a week…I pick her up and the kids go to Florida for a week with dad, then they come back and go to church camp for four days. I wish she could be here for him right now because he looked all over for her. He tried to go upstairs only to fall down after attempting to go up one step. I try to keep him away from the stairs, but he stares upwards looking for her. I brought an unwashed shirt she wore and placed it next to his head. He scooted it so he could lie on top of it…
My poor “old man”…
Here he is…watching over my girl while she sleeps
And using her slipper as a pillow

Poor baby! I hope he feels better soon!
That’s very sad. I hope he recovers well.
now that is sad! but endearing at the same time.. i feel your pain for him, and i hope he recovers without too much trouble.. my furbabies are the same way.. isnt it crazy and adorable how they will latch on, and we do the same? they are truly a blessing!
17?!? Oh, my… Sometimes we ALL need help… Does the vet think he will heal? Or is he destined to be crippled and in pain the rest of his life? So sad…
Yikes! That hurts just to imagine it. I hope he gets better soon.
That is sweet that he is so close to your daughter…I hope he fully recovers!…have a great week.
thanks for the comments!
Poor doggie! We have an ancient dog as well and joke that she’s immortal! I hope that your dog will recover soon! Thanks for the comment you left on my page!
Gosh I hope he recovers quickly… I can remember seeing my dog go through a seizure and me and my son laid hands on him and prayed and then we just cried…….as he calmly laid still and started breathing normally. We had nothing else to do but call on the name of Jesus.. Don’t be afraid to annoint your pet with oil and pray for it. God cares about the th ings you care about. Don’t give up on ”the old man”….. not yet!
